Gabby Petito’s story captured the hearts and minds of Southwest Florida and the entire nation. The YouTube star was killed by her boyfriend, Brian Laundrie, while traveling across the country in 2021.

Her body was discovered weeks later at Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, around the same time Laundrie took his own life. He left behind a notebook which included a note confessing to her murder.

Now, Petito’s mom and stepdad have turned their heartache into purpose. Nichole and Jim Schmidt were the keynote speakers at The Shelter for Abused Women & Children‘s annual Mending Broken Hearts luncheon at The Ritz-Carlton Naples, Tiburón.

“This is a very important cause. It is deeply personal to us, to our family, and so many others,” Nichole stated from the podium.

They want to ensure Gabby’s legacy lives on by protecting domestic abuse victims and assisting others whose loved ones are missing.

To that end, they co-founded the Gabby Petito Foundation. The couple shares their grief and journey, saying it’s about healing, hope, and powerful activism.

“Gabby was such a light in this world. She was a free spirit. She loved art, drawing, traveling, as you could see by her YouTube video that she put out,” recalled Petito’s mother. “And we just miss her so much.”

Gabby was the oldest of six children. She was only 22 when she was killed. Her parents said her death shattered their family, and their hearts will forever be broken.

“We just hope that Gabby, one, inspires people who might be in a bad relationship to get out safely when they can. Also, to enjoy life. Live your life, be free, and do the things that make you happy,” added Jim Schmidt.

They know sharing Gabby’s story has already saved many lives and shed light on an issue that has sadly become all too common.

“I hope that she is proud of us and what we are doing,” shared Nichole. “And I hope that we continue to make her proud and save lives, continuing her story.”
