Worry Monsters help kids understand letting go

Shelter intern Carolin Hafele uses a bubble machine to allow Peacemaker participants to pop their worries away.

For the past two Tuesday evenings, the Peacemakers (a children’s group led by Shelter Advocate Sandra Hack) have been talking about how to recognize and deal with worry. From puppet shows to art projects, the children have been learning about what it means to worry and how worrying affects their lives. To better understand the need to let worries go, the children made “Worry Monsters” under the direction of new Healing Arts Advocate Erin Beltavski.

Similar to a worry doll, which takes on the “worries” of a child at bedtime, the Worry Monsters accepted the children’s written concerns on a slip of paper. Once inside and sealed with a lid, the Monsters “ate” the worries, allowing the children to focus on resolution and healing. The children topped off the evening popping  “worry bubbles” and dancing to Pharrell William’s song, “Happy.”
