Get ready for the gala: Navigating Fashion With Purpose
By Sandra Yeyati
Linda Oberhaus, CEO of The Shelter for Abused Women & Children, understands and accepts the responsibilities of a high-profile position, offering inspiration and leading by example with the clothes she wears. “Balancing style with a nonprofit’s mission requires intentional choices that honor values, foster inclusivity and empower individuals, ensuring that fashion becomes a tool of credibility and confidence, rather than a distraction from the purpose,” she shares.
From daytime meetings to evening functions, Oberhaus relies on the sleek and elegant look of a pantsuit. “Although party dresses look great on some people, I feel most comfortable and authentic in dress slacks and a jacket,” she explains. “Dressing well for galas or events builds trust with donors and partners, showing respect for the occasion while keeping the mission front-and-center.”
Demonstrating her commitment to the community, she supports local designers, as well as The Shelter Options Shoppe. Her favorite find, a nearly new Giorgio Armani blazer, exemplifies her belief that fashion can be stylish, sustainable and mission-driven.
Oberhaus chooses attire that is approachable and inclusive, ensuring that staff, volunteers and beneficiaries feel comfortable and represented. To keep the mission at the forefront, she adds scarves, pins or jewelry to subtly reference the nonprofit’s logo, color or cause. Purple, a symbol of courage and survival, is the nationally recognized hue for domestic-violence awareness.
Overall, Oberhaus’ approach to fashion reflects a commitment to inspiring others while advancing The Shelter’s mission. She explains, “For women, especially, style can be framed as a tool of empowerment, helping them feel confident, visible and ready to lead.”
