City proclaims Ride for The Shelter Day

The Shelter for Abused Women & Children’s “Spokes’men” Gordon Kellam and Glen Schwesinger came before Naples City officials, Sept. 16, to accept a proclamation for “Ride for The Shelter Day.” Traveling over 1,500 miles by bicycle from Naples to Washington D.C. in April 2016, the local business men plan to raise awareness for The Shelter’s Gentle’men Against Domestic Violence (GADV) ® Initiative which calls upon men to stand with women as equal partners in addressing the root causes of domestic violence.

The GADV initiative was created to identify, educate and obtain the commitment of a group of like-minded men in Collier County to support The Shelter’s Raising Gentle’men” program which teaches young men and boys that strength does not equal violence and true gentle’men exhibit the traits of respect, loyalty, honesty and accountability.

Ride for The Shelter Day will be celebrated with a kickoff party at 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 22 at 7th Avenue Social, 849 7th Avenue South, Naples. Tickets are on sale now.

On April 16, 2016, Kellam and Schwesinger will leave Naples at 10 a.m. from 7th Avenue Social and continue the 1,156-mile ride to the Nation’s Capitol, where they will meet with elected officials. Along the way, they will stop at domestic violence shelters and meet with NFL teams to discuss the GADV Initiative.

A variety of sponsorship opportunities are still available to provide much needed supplies for The Ride, such as, tires, transportation, clothing and food.

For more information about The Ride, visit www.naplesshelter.org/ride/ or call Tamika Seaton, Senior Development Officer at (239) 775-3862 ext. 217, or email Tamika at tseaton@naplesshelter.org.

Proceeds from this event will further The Shelter’s mission to prevent, protect and prevail over domestic violence through advocacy, empowerment and social change. With your help, we can promote healthy relationships and prevail over domestic violence in our community.

The Shelter for Abused Women & Children was recently awarded Bronze recognition in the MerComm Annual Report Competition (ARC) for its 2014-2015 Annual Report. An international competition, the ARC Awards attract entries from throughout the world.

Designed by Sherri Morrison, of Sherri Morrison Creative Design, The Shelter’s 36-page report, “Reflections and New Directions,” celebrated the agency’s 25th Anniversary, outlining past and present operations as well as future plans.

The Shelter received the Bronze Award in the category of non-traditional-social services. The Children’s Home Society of California placed first in the non-traditional category with a Gold Award and The Family Planning Association of Sri Lanka received an honorable mention.

“This was a major undertaking and we are thrilled to receive this recognition,” said Linda Oberhaus, Executive Director for The Shelter. “Extensive time went into research, composition, layout and review. The resulting report shares The Shelter’s story from its early beginnings as a converted four-plex in East Naples to the state-of-the-art facility survivors of domestic violence and their families enjoy today.”

The ARC Awards Competition is unique in that each annual report is judged against itself, based on its success in communicating its company’s story. Some of the criteria included cover design, president’s letter, interior design, clarity of written text, presentation of corporate information, expression of financial data, and how well the spirit of the organization is communicated.

Judges from around the globe participated on the ARC jury panels. Reports scoring in the top 30 percent are awarded Honors, Bronze, Silver and Gold certificates of outstanding achievement.

The Shelter, Collier County’s only certified domestic violence center, is leading the community to prevent, protect and prevail over domestic violence and human trafficking through advocacy, empowerment and social change. In 2014-15 our emergency shelter provided a total of 18,573 nights of safety and 3,117 kennel nights to 412 individuals. Thank you for supporting Give Back – Fill A Pack!

Our Give Back – Fill A Pack School Drive was very successful thanks to tremendous participation from the community. Thanks to your generosity, the children in The Shelter’s Naples and Immokalee outreach programs and emergency shelter will be ready to start their school year with the supplies needed to ensure success. This small “hand up” is also a welcome gift to parents, who may otherwise have to choose between groceries and school supplies.

The total number of filled backpacks came to 300! Thanks to Allstate Insurance, Laces of Love, Marco Island Police and Fire departments, Moorings Park, NextGen Committee, Premier Sotheby’s International Realty, Lutgert Insurance, Publix, Target, Vi at Bentley, Walmart, Weigold Air Conditioning, the Woodruff Institute for Dermatology and Cosmetic Surgery and all those who donated financially to the success of this effort. Shelter Trustee Bob Cahners featured in Boston Globe

The efforts of longtime Shelter Trustee Bob Cahners were featured in the July 19 travel section of the Boston Globe. The article, written by Rich Fahey, outlined a growing Naples connection to the Boston area. Shelter Executive Director Linda Oberhaus was quoted by the author regarding Bob’s contributions to the Shelter. Bob and his late wife Pam retired to Naples from Boston in the early 1990s.

Below is an excerpt from the story: [button url=”https://naplesshelter.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/BostonGlobe_7-19-15.pdf” style=”xsmall”]Read Full Story[/button]

“Bob Cahners of the Boston-based Cahners publishing family, a noted philanthropist, moved to the Naples area 20 years ago and became involved in many community causes, including serving on the board of trustees of the Naples Shelter for Abused Women and Children.

On March 9 of this year, Cahners dedicated Pam’s Porch at the Rabb Cottage, one of the shelter’s seven transitional cottages, in memory of his wife, Pamela, who died in March 2013. He had previously made funding possible for one of the cottages.

“Bob Cahners has been a wonderful ambassador for the Shelter for Abused Women and Children for over 15 years,” said Linda Oberhaus, the executive director. “In addition to being an original member of the shelter’s board of trustees, he supported our capital campaign to build a state of the art domestic violence center in Naples.”
