2024 Domestic Violence Awareness Month Activities

One in four American women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime, according to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence. That’s more women than are affected by breast cancer, ovarian cancer and lung cancer combined. Still, more than one-third of Americans have never discussed the issue.

Throughout the month of October, The Shelter for Abused Women & Children is raising public awareness to end domestic violence and human trafficking with a variety of events as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM).

MORE WAYS YOU CAN HELP!

Every Thursday in October! Wear purple to raise awareness about domestic violence. Purple is the signature color of domestic violence awareness. Wearing purple is the perfect way to start the conversation and end the silence on domestic violence. Snap a selfie or a group shot and post it on your social media with #purplethursday and tag The Shelter.

Sunday, Oct. 13, 2024, 9-11 a.m. at Naples Botanical Garden. NOTE: This event is for dogs and owners only. Co-sponsored by the Botanical Garden & Humane Society Naples, this event raises awareness for the effect of domestic violence on family pets. Attendees must be accompanied by a dog to receive admission discount for up to two adults, two dogs, and children from the same household. One dog permitted per adult. Free bandanas (while they last). All dogs must be up to date on vaccinations and controlled on NON-RETRACTABLE leashes.

FILL OUT WAIVER

Wednesday, Oct. 16, 6 p.m., Cambier Park, 755 8th Ave South in Naples. Join us for a public candlelight vigil to remember lives taken by domestic violence. The short outdoor service will include a roll call of the names of Collier County residents killed by domestic violence, followed by a moment of silence and prayer. The event is open to the public. Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 19-20, The Shelter Options Shoppe, 968 2^nd Ave. North in Naples. Every Options Shopper who wears purple will receive an additional 15% special discount at check out. There will also be purple refreshments, giveaways, prize drawing and information on The Shelter for Abused Women & Children. We also accept donations of quality used clothing and furnishings, so this is a good time to clean out your closets.

Monday, Oct. 21, 3-6 p.m. at the Immokalee Sports Complex, 505 Escambia St. – The event is free and open to the public. Activities include children’s games, food, entertainment, and information booths hosted by partner agencies. This event is free and open to the public.

Monday, Oct. 28, 5:30 p.m., Zocalo, 107 North 1st Street, Immokalee. The public is invited to gather at Zocalo and march as a community to call for an end to domestic violence.

The Shelter’s DVAM Clothesline Project features t-shirts designed by Shelter participants. The goal is to increase awareness of the impact of violence and abuse, to honor a survivor’s strength to continue, and to provide another avenue for them to courageously break the silence that often surrounds their experience.
