Stayer Shelter design wins architectural award

The Shelter recently received news that its Shelly Stayer Shelter in Immokalee has received an Aurora Award from the Southeast Building Conference during the organization’s 42 Annual Awards competition. The awards honor the best in architectural marketing and design.

Determined from a competitive field of nearly 300 entries, the awards were determined by a panel of judges, including some of the most creative and successful designers, planners and builders in the industry.

Submitted by builder BUILD LLC and architect David Corban, the Stayer Shelter received Grand in the Supportive Housing category.

Named for lead benefactor Shelly Stayer, the 60-bed emergency shelter provides short and long-term housing and therapies for victims of human trafficking and domestic violence. The facility features three main areas: a section to address the long-term therapeutic needs for victims of human trafficking; a section for sheltering victims of domestic abuse; and a section dedicated to community outreach.

The style of the building was inspired by industrial design, showcasing a standing seam metal roof, polished concrete flooring, cypress T&G on ceiling and walls, exposed metal beams, and an abundance of windows. A combination of stucco, exposed masonry, beautiful cypress, and painted metal panels clad the exterior of the buildings. Additional elements include a state-of-the-art security system, a main courtyard that includes a playground and turf grass that was installed with hydrochill cooling infill, and a generator to serve the entire facility when needed.
