There were over 1,600 calls to 911 regarding domestic violence in Collier County in 2018. Children
exposed to this violence live in terrible pain, oftentimes blaming themselves for the abuse. Statistics
show these same children are more than three times as likely to repeat the cycle of abuse in adulthood.
For this reason, primary prevention is vital to The Shelter’s mission:
To Prevent, to protect and to prevail over
domestic violence and human trafficking through
advocacy, empowerment and social change
In 2019
• The Shelter’s primary prevention team reached 94% of all
schools in Collier County, for a total of 14,092 students
• A total of 4,520 early elementary and preschool students
attended The Shelter’s one-hour Hands are for Helping, Not for
Hurting programs. Of those, 100% learned healthy ways to
manage anger, fear and frustration
• Of the 1,744 teenage students who attended Expect Respect
presentations, follow-up evaluations showed that 97% learned
“I learned a lot about self- the essential principles of healthy boundaries, teen dating
control and how to make violence, bullying and resources for help
wiser decisions.”
