EMERGENCY SHELTER
Brooke was physically, emotionally and financially
bankrupt when she arrived at The Shelter with a bag of
clothes and her two dogs.
At 20, Brooke had been abused her entire life; first by
her mother and then by her boyfriend, Jeff. Although
Jeff did not work, he controlled all of their finances,
withholding money to punish her if she didn’t do
exactly as he said. If she came home late from work,
she was threatened or beaten. Sometimes Jeff would
show up at her workplace and assault her in front of
her co-workers.
Brooke’s only source of happiness were her two dogs.
When Jeff began to kick and abuse them, she took a
friend’s advice and came to The Shelter because it had
a kennel.
At The Shelter, Brooke learned the dynamics of a
healthy relationship. She took part in counseling and
economic empowerment classes and found a new job.
The impact of her success gave her the self-confidence
to enroll in college and move into her own apartment.
For the first time in her life, Brooke is choosing her own
path and making her own decisions, free from violence
and abuse. Your support is making this possible.
