For 10 years, Deborah’s abuser controlled every aspect
of her life. She suffered physical, emotional, and financial
abuse. She was not allowed to work or talk to her family
or friends. She had to account for every penny she spent.
Her only pair of eye glasses were taped together to keep
them from falling apart.
When he started abusing her in front of their three children,
Deborah made a courageous decision. While her abuser
was at work, she brought her family safely to The Shelter.
Shelter life is challenging, but Deborah and her children
eagerly embraced the programs and services offered to
them. It was a poignant moment when Deborah received
an eye exam and a brand new pair of glasses.
Through tears, she shared that she had accomplished
more in one week at The Shelter than she did in 10 years
with her abuser.
Another moment of clarity thanks to you!
that moment...
“The thought of anyone being in an abusive family situation is horrifying to me.
I remember hearing a young man share his story at one of the early fundraisers.
He was only 12, but he spoke so eloquently about the tremendous relief he felt the
moment he and his mom walked through the threshhold of The Shelter. I will never
forget that young man.”
