State Attorney’s Office Advocate
The Shelter’s State Attorney’s Office Advocate (SAO) assists survivors in domestic violence related court case for Collier County. These include both misdemeanor and felony cases.
The SAO Advocates informs survivors of their rights as a victim of a crime; this includes information of any plea offers made to the perpetrators. The SAO Advocate has direct access to the assigned prosecutors of domestic violence cases and will help relay messages/questions to and from the prosecutor/victim. She assists in preparing the victim for court, is present during all court proceedings and provides emotional support throughout the whole process. The goal of the partnership between The Shelter and the State Attorney’s Office is to help survivors navigate the legal system easily and successfully.
In addition to providing court support, The Shelter’s SAO Advocate assists the victim with completing the Crime Victim’s Compensation application. The Victim Compensation program offers financial assistance for the following situations:
- Disability
- Economic losses incurred such as wage loss
- Funeral/burial expenses
- Relocation Expenses
- Treatment costs such as medical, mental health or grief counseling
