This is strictly up to you, the donor. This is the value you think the donation is worth at the time of your donation.

Generally, a donor must have a written appraisal for items (or groups of similar items) for which the donor claims more than $5,000 per item or group of similar items in a year (whether or not donated to the same donee).

There are very specific requirements regarding qualified appraisers and appraisals. You should consult with your tax professional for specific requirements.

If you are nonprofit, why do customers have to pay sales tax?

Since Options is part of The Shelter and considered a nonprofit organization, the store and The Shelter don’t pay sales tax on any purchases we make. However, you, as an individual shopper, are not tax exempt; so we must collect and deposit state sales tax on all the purchases you make. For sales tax purposes, purchasing merchandise at Options is the same as purchasing it at any other retail store.  The only stores that do not have to collect sales tax from the buyers are those owned by religious organizations.
