An estimated 1.5 million children witness domestic violence each year in the United States, and these same children are three times more likely to repeat the cycle in adulthood (Childhood Domestic Violence Association). Hands are for Helping, Not for Hurting provides the opportunity to address physical aggression with peers, provide new venues for self expression and showcase various positive ways for students to use their hands instead of hitting.
Since 2000, The Shelter’s Hands are for Helping, Not for Hurting prevention program has provided preschool through first grade students with an exciting and interactive learning experience utilizing Martine Agassi’s book, “Hands are for Helping, Not for Hitting.” Children are presented with non-aggressive ways to express anger and other emotions as well as focus on positive ways to use their hands, through an interactive story time and pledge activity. Students also create their own banner with their hand stamps to display in their classroom and receive a booklet to take home as a reminder (see booklet at right). Youth participating in the Hands are for Helping, Not for Hurting program are able to:
- Identify anger and how to manage it appropriately
- Understand that hitting is never okay
- Learn positive alternatives to dealing with anger, sadness, etc.
- Demonstrate the positive things they can do with their hands
- Learn healthy problem solving and coping skills
The impact of these programs should not be underestimated. When youth are empowered, their broadened awareness will ultimately create positive change and a safer community.
Past presentation venues include various elementary schools in Collier County, including daycares and afterschool programs. Overall, The Shelter’s primary prevention efforts seek to reduce the likelihood that anyone will become a victim or a perpetrator by creating conditions that make violence less likely to ever occur. The Shelter created this comprehensive presentation striving to accommodate the needs of as many local schools
as possible.
