Transitional Living Cottage 8 breaks ground
The Shelter broke ground, July 2, 2019, for its eighth Transitional Living Cottage. The cottages provide up to two years of housing for survivors of domestic violence as they continue to work with The Shelter to secure their social, emotional and financial independence. Rent is set on a sliding scale.
“We are excited to be breaking ground for this much-needed cottage,” said Shelter CEO Linda Oberhaus. “Affordable housing remains a top need for survivors of domestic violence. As our survivors prepare to exit emergency shelter, many are facing homelessness. Having safe, affordable housing eases the financial hardship and allows participants to focus on schooling or job advancement that will improve their lives and the lives of their children.”
The contractor for the project is PBS Contractors, which has built all seven of the three-bedroom/two-bath cottages. According to PBS Senior Relationship Manager Mario Valle, construction will begin on July 15, with completion in approximately 126 days.
“These transitional cottages are the physical representation of The Shelter’s mission to prevent, protect and prevail over domestic violence and human trafficking,” Valle stated. “We deeply value our long-standing relationship with The Shelter, and we are honored to be a part of that mission.”
Prior to entry, Transitional Living participants meet with the Transitional Living Advocate to create individual service plans. Additionally, a weekly meeting schedule and participation in the weekly life skills group are coordinated. Service plan goals typically include increasing income, decreasing public assistance, and developing skills and abilities which empower the individual to build hope for the future; self sustain, and obtain permanent violence-free housing.
