Psycho-education
It is very common for survivors to come to therapy and feel that they were the cause of the abuse, and that they are damaged beyond repair. These are normal responses to the trauma of abuse. Often by demystifying the traumatic response and realizing that these feelings are a normal reaction to trauma, survivors begin to see their experiences in a different light, and feel more able to start the healing process. Activities and handouts are available to help survivors process the traumatic event(s) and integrate the abuse into their past in order to heal and move on.
Talk Therapy
Through a client-centered approach, our therapists work with survivors individually to identify therapeutic goals. Some common therapeutic goals include ways to reduce symptoms related to trauma, such as anxiety and depression, and ways to increase safety and positive coping skills, including mindfulness and relaxation techniques.
Traumatic Incident Reduction and Unblocking
The Shelter’s Clinical staff is trained in Traumatic Incident Reduction and Unblocking, two modalities that are shown to be highly effective in eliminating the negative impact of past traumatic events. For more information, go to tira.org
