Bonita Springs Elementary thanks Shelter advocates

The Shelter’s Healthy Friendships Advocate Sandi Hack and Raising Gentle’men Advocate Sergio Lopez recently received a special party to thank them for presenting their prevention programs at the school.

“It was so very sweet,” said Sandi. “They truly love the presentations and the work The Shelter is doing to help prevent domestic violence before it even begins.”

Sandi said the school’s guidance counselor conducted a survey of behavior referrals prior to and following the presentations. The results showed a significant drop in the number of referrals following the presentations.

The Shelter Board Year in Review 2016

Congratulations to the 2015-16 Board Chair Linda Hinds and to all of our board members for a busy and productive year of service to The Shelter! Enjoy this video collage of our year in review.

Linda Oberhaus comments on Cape Coral Mayor filing restraining order

Linda Oberhaus interviewed by WINK reporter Adam Wright regarding restraining order filed by Cape Coral Mayor Marni Sawicki. Sawicki says she was in fear of her safety after a break up with her boyfriend.

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Cape Coral mayor Marni Sawicki said she felt threatened and afraid in court documents she filed to place a restraining order on her ex-boyfriend, a city employee.

Sawicki, who was absent from Monday’s City Council meeting, said she’s scared to attend the meetings because of the presence of her ex-boyfriend, according to the documents. She said he leaves her threatening voicemails and sends hundreds of texts a day.

“In this case there were a lot of red flags that this person is in an abusive relationship,” said Linda Oberhaus, executive director of The Shelter for Abused Women & Children in Naples. “You know when she talked about getting hundreds of texts a day, being physically threatened, him coming to her work place unexpectedly, banging on doors and windows… .”

Sawicki declined to address the matter in a statement she texted to WINK News, calling it a personal matter, not a city one. Still, it casts a public light on an issue that affects many in Southwest Florida and elsewhere.

“Domestic violence for many years has been a private family matter, and unless we’re talking about it, and doing something about it, we’re never going to ultimately eliminate it,” Oberhaus said.

Ride for The Shelter Welcome Back Party

The Shelter celebrated the safe return of its Gentle’men Against Domestic Violence ‘Spokes’men’ Colin Estrem, Gordon Kellam and Glen Schwesinger, May 12, 2016, with a Welcome Back Party at Cafe Lurcat in Naples. Around 50 people turned out to celebrate the trio’s successful 12-day, 1,200-mile bike ride from Naples to Washington, DC. CLICK HERE to read their 13-day blog.

Shelter recognizes three team members

The Shelter honored three members of its team, May 11, during the monthly staff meeting.

Shelter Executive Director Linda Oberhaus presented DV Advocate Berta Garcia (left in photo left) and InVEST Advocate Anabel Sathan with their five-year pins in recognition of service to The Shelter.

Shelter Director of Operations  Julie Franklin (photo right) was also honored as Employee of the Quarter. This is what her fellow co-worker had to say:

Julie Franklin deserves this nomination because of her hard work, dedication and positive attitude. She manages The Shelter’s finances and reports on a monthly basis to the Board of Directors, Trustees, Collier County and private donors. This might sound like a simple task, but when you take a closer look, these reports are comprehensive, which includes our fundraising events, donations, and grants.

You might notice that Julie carries two bags, one being her purse and a large tote with folders. This tote is her weekend homework; she works almost every weekend to complete our financial reports in timely manner. Did I mention she also handles all the renovations of The Shelter and Options?

After understanding Julie’s critical role in our agency and the stresses involved in her position, I am amazed with her positive and happy outlook. Julie also has a big, kind heart and truly cares about all our staff members. She is always willing to help and is a creative problem solver. She doesn’t like to say, “no”, instead Julie finds creative compromises to difficult situations. Julie Franklin is an absolute pleasure to work with and makes our shelter family complete!

Congratulations to Anabel, Berta and Julie! Thank you for going above and beyond! Your dedication makes a positive difference for the staff and families we serve.

Helping, healing hands are true gift

facialThe Shelter is grateful to the helping and healing hands provided by Richard and Martina Muller, owners of DiVine Spa in Naples. Since January, the Mullers have generously provided free monthly massages and facials to our Shelter residents and participants. It is a wonderful gift that most of these women would likely never have the chance to experience without this kind gesture.

Linda Oberhaus named to National Coalition Against Domestic Violence

Linda Oberhaus2The Shelter for Abused Women & Children and its Board of Directors are pleased to announce that Executive Director Linda Oberhaus was recently elected to the Board of Directors for the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence.

“We are excited for Linda as well as The Shelter,” said Linda Hinds, Board Chair for The Shelter. “She is well deserving of this honor, and her presence on the NCADV board will help raise our local mission and programming to the national level.”

Oberhaus has more than 25 years of professional experience in the human services field. She has served as Executive Director of The Shelter since 2007, coming to the position from Tampa, FL, where she served as Executive Director at The Spring of Tampa Bay.

A graduate of the University of South Florida, Oberhaus earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in social work. She also completed post graduate courses in nonprofit management at Harvard Business School and Harvard Kennedy School.

Oberhaus has previously served as a board member of the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence and the President’s Family Justice Center Initiative. She is a graduate of Leadership Hillsborough Class of 2007, Leadership Collier Class of 2010 and Leadership Florida Class of 2013. She is also a 2015 graduate of the FBI Citizen’s Academy.

As a member of the NCADV board, Oberhaus will help create national policy and uphold the board’s mission to create a culture where domestic violence is not tolerated; and where society empowers victims and survivors, and holds abusers accountable.

Glenn. “She brings with her a wealth of knowledge and experience that will help NCADV affect public policy, increase understanding of the impact of domestic violence, and provide programs and education that drive that change.”

Why we are here

Research shows that women ages 16 to 24 experience the highest per capita rates of intimate violence—nearly 20 per 1000 women and about one in three high school students have been or will be involved in an abusive relationship. Forty percent of teenage girls age 14-17 say they know someone their age that has been hit or beaten by a boyfriend and 20 percent of dating couples report some type of violence in their relationship. Violent relationships in adolescence can have serious ramifications for victims, putting them at higher risk for substance abuse, eating disorders, risky sexual behavior, suicide, and adult revictimization.

The severity of violence among intimate partners has been shown to be greater in cases where the pattern of violence has been established in adolescence, technologies such as cell phones and Internet have made dating abuse both more pervasive and more hidden. Research also demonstrates that 75% of parents were unaware that their teen had been physically hurt or bruised by their partner and only 33% of teens suffering dating abuse have talked to anyone about what is happening to them.

The Youth Advisory Council aims to increase the number of teens who receive information about Teen Dating Violence (TDV) and Shelter programs as well as increase the number of schools that permit TDV presentation and a broadened community awareness of Teen Dating and Domestic Violence. This will allow for teens in the community will feel empowered to create positive change, decrease Teen Dating Violence in Collier County and ultimately break the cycle of violence. The Youth Advisory Council aims to create this awareness and social change through Healthy Relationships presentations, public service announcements, community awareness campaigns, teen friendly materials, a teen hotline and having Youth Advisory Council members available in schools as ambassadors of The Shelter and its primary prevention and social change initiative.

Happy Mother’s Day!
