A domestic violence advocate can help survivors in the midst of overcoming their situation or can be a messenger for change to prevent future violence. Survivors of domestic violence may face many challenges when they make the brave decision to leave their abusers and reclaim their lives. Domestic violence advocates are here to help. 

Advocates Help with Transition

Survivors may need help to navigate the legal system, acquire safe shelter and start a new life. They may need to move to another town, or even another state to ensure their safety, find new employment, and enroll children in new schools. Although leaving an abusive relationship requires many scary changes, it is a safe and healthy option. Domestic violence advocates work in a variety of capacities to assist survivors in regaining their safety and well-being. 

Advocates Help with Children

A domestic violence advocate will  provide support to children involved in domestic violence. Depending on the needs of the child either a mentorship and/or a therapist will assist children understand and heal from domestic violence.

Advocates Help with Legal Needs

Attending to civil legal matters is vital to a survivor’s overall well-being. In addition to rights and protections afforded by protective orders, divorce and gaining legal custody of children, survivors often gain a sense of empowerment as these steps are taken. Ultimately, the job of all domestic violence advocates is to help survivors cope with the traumas they have endured and empower them to live healthy lives surrounded by people who genuinely care about them.
